Although Vietnam’s oyster industry is relatively young, the industry has undergone rapid growth and success since its inception. This presentation will discuss the role of Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata) in the carbon cycle and rates of carbon “sequestration” in northern Vietnam (Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 1). By doing so, the potential value of oyster carbon deposition to oyster industry carbon off-set schemes can be fully evaluated. Through working closely with communities and local businesses, the current and potential supply chain can be examined and options to utilise residual carbon-trapping oyster shells and other value-adding by-products can be explored. This information highlights many opportunities for Australia, including carbon trading, consumer choice, and natural accounting, all of which will be discussed.
